SHRUTI VENKITACHALAM

SHRUTI VENKITACHALAM, the founder and Director is a Head and Neck Oncologist (surgeon), passionate about translational medical research. She studied Master’ in Surgery (M. S.) - Otorhinolaryngology at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal (India). She had several opportunities to listen to lectures by the eminent visionary, Prof. Valiathan; who inspired her to approach research with as much zeal as practice medicine. She was honored to receive the award for the best outgoing student in ENT in 2014 from Prof. Valiathan’s hands. Hearing his story about the first heart valves made in India, besides many other products, further nudged her enthusiasm to try and make a mark in translational research from the lab to the patient.

With a passion for specializing in Head and Neck surgery, she worked at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, for a few months, aided by a competitive grant. Soon after, she did a post-doctoral fellowship for 2 years at Christian Medical College, Vellore. There she received world-class training from some of the best surgeons in India and had the opportunity to serve patients from across the country. Exposure to both these Institutions, besides providing excellent training, allowed her to see from close quarters the socio-economic divide, the need for indigenous drugs and products, and easily accessible and affordable patient care aids in India.

She realized that India is considered the “Oral cancer capital of the world”, accounting for a third of the burden globally. Even with access to the best technology, machinery, and pathologists to investigate, the best surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists to treat these patients, exaggerated maintenance/treatment costs due to lack of indigenization are a major social/financial burden to the cancer victims.

She realized that though India made scientific contributions through publications and patents in a vast spectrum of disciplines, a bridge between physicians and basic research scientists is a missing link. Therefore, she seeks to contribute to bridging these socio-economic medical and healthcare divides and fill the gaps by translating research in the laboratories of our country to the field and market to make a difference in the treatment, and therefore lives, of patients, not just in India, but the entire world. So she has worked hard to establish a link with researchers who have proven viable concepts for starting VIVEKBIOPHARMA with a well-defined vision.

Leveraging on four decades of pioneering research expertise in biochemistry, stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and quality control of biomedical products, she also aims to bridge the gap between research and clinical applications. From her early days at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, she followed the motivational speeches by the visionary founder Prof. MS Valiathan. She is grateful to him for igniting her passion for innovation, and to his successors for encouraging collaboration for leading the cutting-edge research solutions.

From her graduate days in the 1980s to becoming a seasoned research guide, she has dedicated herself to applied research culminating in human resource development through mentoring and nurturing talent, team building and management, fostering collaborative excellence, and research excellence securing many national/international patents and publications in renowned journals.

Now, driven by a renewed sense of purpose, she aims to translate cutting-edge healthcare technologies into tangible impact. By shaping up a cohesive team sharing similar mindsets and commitment, she envisions bridging the gap between innovation and clinical application, developing sustainable, accessible biomedical solutions, and empowering the next generation of researchers and entrepreneurs.

Through forming a company, she seeks to leverage her expertise in biomedical product development, foster strategic collaborations and partnerships, and drive innovation, quality, and regulatory excellence.

LISSY K. KRISHNAN

TARA S is a dedicated biomedical researcher with extensive experience in basic and translational science who is pursuing postdoctoral research at Case Western Reserve University, USA. During her current position, she actively engaged in academia-industry interactions and bridging the gap between academic research and practical applications. Her work spans from studying molecular mechanisms of disease to developing novel drugs and biomimetic matrices for regenerative therapies. Throughout her career, she has consistently focused on projects with strong potential for translational application always driven by the vision of how her discoveries could eventually impact clinical practice and move from bench to bedside.

With a strong background in regenerative medicine from the Biomedical Technology Wing of Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, an Institution known for successfully developing and commercializing medical technologies, she gained valuable exposure to the process of bringing innovations from lab to market. Her research culminated in co-inventing an Indian patent on injectable biomimetic fibrin gel composite for spinal cord injury.

Before her doctoral program, she gained one year of industrial experience through the DBT/Biotech Industrial Training Programme. This opportunity provided her with valuable insights into the practical aspects of biomedical research and development in a commercial setting, enhancing her understanding of industry dynamics and requirements, and preparing her for the dynamic environment of a biopharma company.

She has joined VIVEKBIOPHARMA to leverage her passion for translating research into practical therapeutic solutions. Her interests align perfectly with the company's noble mission of improving patient outcomes through cutting-edge biopharmaceutical approaches, more effective treatments, and potentially more affordable healthcare solutions.

RENU RAMESH is fascinated by how basic research transforms into translational research. Immediately after her college education while working on a cancer research project at the Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, through a brief international stint at the Kagoshima University Japan sparked her deep fascination with molecular biology. Later by working on a technology development project at the Biomedical Wing at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Research, Trivandrum, she was exposed to the complexities of tissue development and regeneration, which subsequently helped her doctoral studies.

Creating a functional tissue model by integrating various biological, chemical, and mechanical factors honed her skills; both in designing experiments and problem-solving. The vibrant ecosystem at SCTIMST allowed her to work alongside engineers, clinicians, and biomaterial scientists bridging the gap between fundamental research and its clinical applications.

While carrying out her postdoctoral research at Kerala University and RCC Trivandrum, with a refined skill she has communicated with various funding agencies effectively to secure financial support for research projects that provided her with valuable administrative experience.

Her background in basic research, combined with her enthusiasm for innovative applications, positions her to make a valuable contribution to the team at VIVEKBIOPHARMA.
